I. Applied Surgical Anatomy Workshop

The day comprises of two distinct but related events. During the morning session, the delegates will have the opportunity to participate in an Applied Surgical Anatomy Workshop. Taught by practising surgeons, this highly interactive session will feature focus-group discussions and individual demonstrations complemented by interactive lectures in surgical anatomy. The workshop will use imaginative artwork in identifying important surface anatomy landmarks and the underlying structures on live human models. The delegates will also be taught common surgical approaches relevant at a senior medical student/junior doctor level.

II. Suturing Skills Workshop

In the afternoon, the workshop will introduce to the participant some of the basic surgical techniques including suturing and knot-tying. This session will be delivered using a series of tutor demonstrations and 'hands-on sessions' where participants work on animal tissue and on dedicated practice kits. This practical session will have a high tutor-to-participant ratio, and will be tutored and supervised by surgeons. The areas covered will include: handling surgical instruments in a safe and effective manner; creating secure 'Reef' and 'Surgeons' knots, and; performing an interrupted and/or continuous suture to close a wound.
