DESCRIPTION:

This intensive one-day course will focus on the anatomical basis of all clinical examinations relevant to medical student exams in their clinical years (Years 3, 4 and 5).

Taught by surgeons, this course will be delivered by surface anatomy demonstration, small group teaching and demonstration of clinical examination on volunteers. The teaching will be divided into three components: (i) Essential clinical anatomy of a system (ii) Demonstration of correct technique to undertake the examination, and (iii) Discussion of relevant pathology pertaining to the system (e.g., painful arc syndrome, Trendelenberg gait, intermittent claudication). The session will enhance the candidate’s understanding of the rationale behind performing a particular test (e.g., abduction of the shoulder to test for supraspinatus or Buerger’s test) and enable them to develop the skills to perform a confident and thorough clinical examination.

  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the hand
  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the hip
  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the knee
  • Overview of brachial and lumbo-sacral plexus and examination of nerve injuries in the limbs
  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the peripheral arterial system
  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the peripheral venous system (varicose veins)
  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the neck and thyroid
  • Clinical anatomy, examination and pathologies of the abdomen including scrotal swellings and hernia


Places are strictly limited to ensure that there is sufficient opportunity for every candidate to interact during the small group teaching sessions. It will thus be offered on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis.

Course Fee: £35.00
