Description:
This intensive one-day clinical examination course is specially tailored to assist final year medical students prepare for the OSCE component of the exam in March 2013.
Taught by physicians and surgeons, this course will provide students with focused revision of the most common OSCE scenarios tested in the exam. It will also aid the candidate's ability to obtain a focused history, interpret relevant data, communicate effectively, and perform clinical examinations slickly and present the findings to the examiner in a systematic and concise manner. In addition, the candidates can use this course to consolidate their previously acquired knowledge, streamline their thought process and obtain essential exam-preparation tips from the clinicians.
FORMAT AND TOPICS:
There are no lectures and the course will be conducted in the format of small group teaching/mock OSCE, focusing on the areas mentioned below. Every candidate will have the opportunity to undertake, and be assessed, in a minimum of 3-4 mock OSCE stations throughout the day.
Cardiovascular System
- Examination of the precordium
- Focused examination of the cardiovascular system
- Acute illness management - Central chest pain
- Interpretation of ECGs
Nervous System and Cranial Nerves
- Focused history and examination - Upper limb neurological examination
- Cranial nerve examination
- Acute illness management – Collapse/Stroke
- Death certification
Respiratory System
- Focused history and examination for pleuritic pain
- Chest examination for wheeze
- Acute illness management - SOB
- Interpretation of blood gas / CXR
Abdomen (Medical)
- Focused history and examination - patient with jaundice
- Focused history and examination - patient with black stools
- Acute illness management - GI bleed
- Interpretation of Abdominal X-ray
Neck, Thyroid and Lymph Nodes
- Examination of the neck and thyroid
- Examination of the regional lymph node basins
- Acute illness management
- Explanation station related to thyroid lump
Orthopaedics
- Clinical Examination of the Shoulder
- Clinical Examination of the Hand
- Clinical Examination of the Knee
- Clinical Examination of the Hip and back
Abdomen (surgical) and Hernia
- Focused History and Examination of the Surgical Abdomen
- Clinical examination of a hernia
- Acute illness management – acute abdomen
- Consenting for a surgical procedure
Peripheral Vascular System/Fluids/Post-op
- Examination of the venous system
- Examination of the peripheral arterial system
- Acute illness management – Critical Limb Ischemia
- Fluid prescribing and management of post-operative patient
Places are strictly limited to ensure that there is sufficient opportunity for every candidate to interact during the small group teaching sessions. It will thus be offered on a 'first-come-first-served' basis.
