Course description:
This is a one day course presented by David O'Halloran. This course will take a brief look at leukaemias and lymphomas, starting with a look at macro and micro anatomy of the circulatory system, and in particular, at how blood cells are formed within the bone marrow. Different types of the blood cells will be explained and related to the similarities and differences between the diseases associated with the circulatory system. Aetiology and epidemiology of Leukaemias and Lymphoma will be discussed, and close attention will be paid to the WHO classification of haemapoetic malignancies with likely treatment options explained.
Learning Outcomes:By the end of this course delegates will be able to:
- Describe the gross anatomy of the Cardiovascular and Lymphatic systems.
- Outline how the different types of blood cells are formed.
- Outline the epidemiology and aetiology associated with common malignancies associated with the circulatory system.
- Understand the common oncological terminology associated with haemopoietic malignancies.
- Explain how disease progression will influence patient management.
- Understand how haemopoetic malignancies can be classified with specific consideration of staging and grading systems.
- Outline what the likely treatment options are for a patient with haemopoietic malignancy.
