This practical ‘hands-on’ course is intended for all healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients in an acute care, emergency and trauma setting. There will be a high tutor-to-delegate ratio, enabling attendees to gain full benefit. This highly interactive half-day course consists of modules and simulated cases, with two thirds of the time spent training on simulated patients, as well as a preliminary theoretical part on an e-learning platform. Evaluation includes e-learning modules, hands-on assessment and MCQs.

The course is aimed specifically at junior doctors who are interested in trauma, emergency medicine, surgery or anaesthetics, and who play an integral part in trauma calls. It is envisaged that this course will teach trainees how to use the specific ultrasound machines and probes, and provide practical exposure to the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in the acute emergency setting.

Attendees will receive theoretical pre-course material on the e-learning platform that explains the background theory and physics of the ultrasound machine. The pre-course material will amount to a total of 2 hours. The practical workshop will include identification of free fluid in the abdomen, pneumothorax, haemothorax, and pericardial effusion with the use of ultrasonography.

Aims:

The course aims to:

  • Provide delegates with an understanding of the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic and decision making tool.
  • Help attendees to identify acute pathology, such as free fluid in the abdomen, pneumothorax, haemothorax, and pericardial effusion.
  • Empower delegates working in the emergency care setting to familiarise themselves with the ultrasound machine, to achieve good views, and to aid diagnosis.

Target Audience:

Specialist Registrars in General Surgery
Specialist Registrars in Trauma Surgery
Specialist Registrars in Emergency Medicine
Core Trainees in any of the Surgical Disciplines
Foundation Doctors (Year 1 and Year 2)
