About
This established six-day intensive programme provides comprehensive preparation for Section 2 of the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in General Surgery. Section 2 represents the clinical and oral component of the examination, and it assesses candidates at the level of a Day 1 Consultant within both General Surgery and the declared surgical subspecialty.
The programme has been delivered for over twelve years, and it is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and high-fidelity FRCS Section 2 preparation courses in the United Kingdom. It is explicitly mapped to the JCIE syllabus blueprint and the Capabilities in Practice required at an ST8 level.
The course is structured as a hybrid model, comprising four theoretical sessions held over four evenings followed by a two-day face-to-face component. Delegates may attend the full six-day programme, which is strongly recommended, or elect to attend either the online theoretical component alone or the face-to-face practical component alone.
The theoretical component is delivered virtually via Zoom from 1815 to 2200 hours, Monday to Thursday. Sessions are consultant-led and structured as interactive case-based discussions rather than didactic lectures. The subspecialties covered include Upper GI Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Trauma, and Critical Care. Emphasis is placed on consultant-level clinical reasoning, applied anatomy, physiology and pathology, oncological principles, management of complications, interpretation of radiology, and discussion of current evidence. These four evenings attract 12 CPD points.
The face-to-face component takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool. There are no lectures during this component; the entire weekend is dedicated to high-intensity mock vivas exclusively facilitated by consultant faculty. Saturday is structured into four formal viva circuits: General Surgery Viva; Trauma and Critical Care Viva; Subspecialty Viva; and Academic Viva. Each candidate is examined individually in short-case scenarios and long-case discussions, including critique of published literature, radiology, and pathology.
Sunday morning consists of individual full mock vivas, replicating the timing and intensity of the examination across all subspecialties and assessing multiple domains of Section 2. In the afternoon, candidates examine real patients with authentic clinical findings, present cases to examiners, and refine examination technique in structured sessions that use commonly tested cases.
Delegates will receive detailed, formative verbal feedback from the viva stations on Saturday, as well as formal written feedback from the mock viva stations on Sunday. The face-to-face component of the course attracts a further 12 CPD points
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility is restricted to ST6 or above, or SpR Year 4 or above, in General Surgery. The course is strongly advised for trainees who have completed Section 1 of the examination or who are intending to sit it in the near future, in accordance with JCIE Regulations. It is particularly beneficial for candidates sitting Section 2 within four to six weeks, although attendance several months in advance may also provide strategic benefit.
