Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:
  1. implement comprehensive geriatric assessment in the management of elderly surgical patients
  2. manage common post-operative problems including:
    • constipation and catheterisation
    • common post-operative arrhythmias
    • analgesia and anti hypertensives in the peri-operative period
    • hydration and nutrition in the peri-operative period
  3. recognise delirium in the peri-operative patient
  4. assess and project individuals' discharge needs to facilitate early multi-disciplinary discharge planning
  5. identify those patients who may benefit from rehabilitation or assessment for rehabilitation
  6. be comfortable in approaching conversations regarding ‘do not attempt resuscitation’ and end of life care decisions requiring an understanding of current best practice guidance and legal requirements.
