At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:
- implement comprehensive geriatric assessment in the management of elderly surgical patients
- manage common post-operative problems including:
- constipation and catheterisation
- common post-operative arrhythmias
- analgesia and anti hypertensives in the peri-operative period
- hydration and nutrition in the peri-operative period
- recognise delirium in the peri-operative patient
- assess and project individuals' discharge needs to facilitate early multi-disciplinary discharge planning
- identify those patients who may benefit from rehabilitation or assessment for rehabilitation
- be comfortable in approaching conversations regarding ‘do not attempt resuscitation’ and end of life care decisions requiring an understanding of current best practice guidance and legal requirements.
