About

The Doctors Academy Cardiff MRCS Part B OSCE Course has supported hundreds of candidates preparing for the Intercollegiate MRCS Part B examination. In addition to our scheduled courses, some delegates seek more individualised support in the weeks leading up to their examination.

These sessions are intended for candidates who have narrowly missed the pass mark, are preparing for a further attempt, are approaching their final permitted attempt, or would benefit from focused guidance in specific areas of the examination.

Teaching is tailored to the individual candidate and may be delivered on a one-to-one basis or in small groups (two or three delegates). Most sessions are delivered online. Face-to-face sessions may also be arranged, subject to faculty and venue availability.

Who Is This Suitable For?

• Candidates who have narrowly missed the MRCS Part B pass mark in a previous attempt.
• Candidates preparing for a resit.
• Candidates with multiple previous attempts.
• Candidates approaching their final permitted attempt.
• Candidates requiring focused guidance in selected areas of the examination.

Online Mock OSCE

A structured online mock OSCE can be arranged to reflect the style and standard of the Intercollegiate MRCS Part B examination. The mock is designed to identify strengths, highlight areas requiring improvement, and provide practical, examiner-led feedback.

The focus will be on:

• examination technique
• communication
• clinical reasoning
• time management
• examiner expectations
• strategies for improvement

Coaching and Skills Support

Sessions are tailored to individual learning requirements and commonly focus on the following areas:

Clinical Examination
Discussion of the structured approach to examination, expected clinical findings, interpretation, presentation of findings, and expectations of the examiner.

Patient-Centred Communication
Consent, breaking bad news, information giving, shared decision-making, and challenging consultations.

Procedural Skills
Discussion of indications, relevant anatomy, procedural steps, patient safety, complications, and expectations of the examiner.

OSCE Technique
Structured approach to stations, presentation, communication, clinical reasoning, time management, and common pitfalls.

Clinical examination and procedural skills sessions delivered online are discussion-based rather than hands-on. They concentrate on the theoretical principles, structured approach, expectations of the examiner, and clinical reasoning underpinning each station. Candidates seeking practical hands-on training are encouraged to attend one of our face-to-face MRCS Part B courses or arrange an individual face-to-face session (subject to availability).

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply a structured approach to MRCS Part B OSCE stations.
2. Demonstrate effective patient-centred communication.
3. Explain the principles underpinning common clinical examination and procedural skills stations.
4. Recognise common examination pitfalls and strategies to improve performance.
5. Develop a focused revision plan based on personalised examiner feedback.

Faculty

Sessions are delivered by experienced MRCS examiners and senior surgical faculty involved in the Doctors Academy Cardiff MRCS Part B OSCE Course.

Fees

This is a not-for-profit educational initiative intended to support candidates who require additional guidance before the MRCS Part B examination. Fees are charged solely to cover administration and faculty teaching time. As each session is tailored to individual requirements, the fee depends on the format, duration, and number of delegates.
