Background
ALSG's Advanced Paediatric Life Support is a leading emergency paediatric life support course. It is taught, and its principles practiced, throughout the world.
Learning Outcomes
- Provide the knowledge necessary for effective treatment and stabilisation of children with life threatening emergencies
- Teach the practical procedures necessary for effective management of childhood emergencies
- Test the acquisition of these skills
Aimed at
Candidates should be from a medical, nursing, ECP, ODP or RTO background for which APLS is relevant to their working practice. RTO's from any background who work in a paediatric hospital are eligible. RTO's who work in a non-paediatric hospital, with any other background to those already listed can send an application to the Working Group detailing their paediatric practice and each of these cases will be considered individually. The Working Group also recommend that nurses are senior staff nurses and above. Experienced level 5 staff nurses may take the course.
Course Programme
The 3-day APLS course comprises of a flexible one-day on-line component (VLE) and a two-day face-to-face course.
VLE On-line pre-course learning (approximately 10 hours) (Part A).
The pre-course learning is divided into 3 sections, each containing a series of topics which should be studied in order: resuscitation, recognition and management of the seriously ill child, recognition and management of the seriously injured child.
2 day face-to-face course (F2F - Part B)
Lectures - Welcome and Aims and Setting the Scene
Demonstrations - Cardiac Simulation, Newborn Resuscitation, Serious Illness Simulation, Serious Injury Simulation
Skill Stations and Workshops - Basic & Advanced Life Support (includes airway management, BLS and Cardiac arrest rhythms and defibrillation). Serious Injury (includes vascular access, stabilisation & transfer, spine protection and chest procedures and needle cricothyroidotomy).
Simulation Teaching Sessions - Cardiac, Serious Illness, Serious Injury.
Interactive Sessions - Assessing and managing the seriously ill child. Structured approach to the seriously injured child
