Learning Outcomes

The EPALS provider course is intended to provide training for multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals in the early recognition of the child in respiratory or circulatory failure and the development of the knowledge and core skills required to intervene to prevent further deterioration towards respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest.

Aimed at

This course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include doctors, nurses and paramedics working in direct contact with children. All applicants should hold a current clinical appointment and professional healthcare qualification. Medical students in their final year of training can be accepted as candidates provided they do not exceed 10% of the total number of candidates.

Course Programme

The course comprises lectures, workshops, practical skill and teaching simulations, mentor/mentee meetings and assessments.

  • Recognition and management of the seriously ill child
  • Paediatric ALS algorithm

Interactive Workshops

  • Post resuscitation care
  • Cardiac arrhythmia with pulse
  • Trauma management
  • NLS in the Emergency Department

Skill Stations

  • Basic life support with bag mask ventilation and choking
  • Airway and ventilation
  • Vascular access
  • Arrhythmia recognition and safe defibrillation

Teaching Simulations

  • NLS in the Emergency Department
  • Respiratory Failure

  • Trauma
  • Cardiac arrhythmias

  • Special circumstances

An experienced faculty will give a simulation teaching demonstration. This introduces the concept of role-play and simulation management, assessment of the critically ill child or infant, shockable/ non-shockable algorithms, feedback, and team leadership skills.

Candidates are required to complete a pre-course multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) on the LMS before attending the course.
