About

This week-long course is aimed at trainees in Plastic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery as well as other health professionals who are interested in Facial Surgery. The course consists of interactive demonstrations by eminent surgeons on anatomy of the face and hands-on sculpting training.

Sculpting is done on a model of face using wax and oil paints. This is a technique used by Forensic sculptors in creating facial sculptures from skulls. Delegates will be taught the basic techniques of sculpting and will be encouraged to build the face layer by layer over the two days, by the end of which there will a complete face with surface anatomical landmarks. Using a mounted plastic skull as an armature, the face is constructed in layers, starting with the deep musculature, the facial fat, the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and musculature, and finally the skin. The final two days of the course will focus specifically on accurate sculpting with an attempt to achieve likeness, giving attention to animation, aging and cosmesis. Special emphasis will be made on creating the key anatomical structures such as the eyes and periorbita, ears, nose, and oral apparatus.
