Introduction to Drawing and Sculpture for Surgeons

27th August 2021

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Cardiff, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff

About:

The skills required by artists – the ability to observe, the propensity to think creatively, and manual dexterity – are all valuable assets for surgeons to possess. This course will demonstrate the effectiveness of drawing as a communicative tool to help doctors interact with patients. It should also be remembered that observation assumes an essential role in medicine, and this course will allow the attendee to enhance his or her perceptive skills in a way that can be beneficial within a clinical context.

This course is suitable for any surgeon with an interest in art. It invites surgical trainees (FY1/FY2; CT1/CT2; ST3-ST6) of all specialities and artistic abilities to gain new skills or to develop existing skills. It is hoped that this enhanced ability to create accurate anatomical diagrams will promote better communication between doctors and patients, as well as amongst doctors.

The afternoon session of the course will introduce attendees to sculpture, and attendees will have the opportunity to create clay models of the head and the hand.

It is envisaged that the knowledge and skills gained during the course will be translated and transferred into a different, yet valuable and effective, manner of communication.

Suitable for:

  • Foundation Year 1 and Foundation Year 2 Doctors
  • Core Surgical Trainees (CT1; CT2; CT3)
  • Specialty Registrars (ST3; ST4; ST5; ST6) in any surgical specialty
  • Trust Grade and Staff Grade Doctors
