The day will consist of interesting and relevant surgical lectures, including a lecture from a CT1 Doctor about life in surgery, and how to secure a job as a Core Surgical Trainee. Additionally, there will be the opportunity for delegates to ask a panel from a wide range of specialties any questions they may have.
There will also be the opportunity for delegates to hone their surgical skills, with workshops to improve their suturing skills ready for theatre and the opportunity to practice laparoscopy.
The workshops will include:
- Practical Suturing Skills – The delegates may practice their suturing and knot-tying skills.
- Laparoscopy – Delegates may practice their laparoscopy skills with advanced techniques.
- Diathermy – Delegates may gain experience using the two diathermy machines provided.

Ms Shetty graduated in India in 1994. After completing postgraduate training in General Surgery in India, she continued Higher Surgical Training in General, Upper GI and Endocrine Surgery in the Northwest Deanery in the UK. She also worked for 2 years as a Clinical Research Fellow in the Intestinal Failure Unit at Hope Hospital. She has been a Consultant in Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 2013, where she is the Surgical Simulation Lead and Trust Lead for IV fluids. Her main interests are in oesophago-gastric cancer, gallbladder and emergency surgery. She is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training, and is the Course Director for Intercollegiate Basic Surgical Skills. She was awarded the Lancashire Evening Post – Hospital Doctor of the Year Award in June 2016. - Mr Ravindra Date, MD, MS, FRCSEd, FRCS (General Surgery)

Mr Date is an experienced Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon. The scope of his work includes laparoscopic cholecystectomies, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgeries, laparoscopic and open hernia repair and endoscopies. Mr Date’s specialty interests are in laparoscopic surgery, bariatric (weight loss) surgery and endoscopy. He is the Simulation Lead in General Surgery and also the Surgical Audit Lead. - Mr Jeremy Ward, MBChB, MD, FRCS (General Surgery)

Mr Ward graduated from the University of Edinburgh and trained in surgery in NW England. He has been Consultant Upper GI and General Surgeon at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals since 2002. His main interests are in oesophago-gastric cancer, gallbladder and emergency surgery. He has a keen interest in patient safety and is a faculty member for Non-Technical Skills Courses at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also an examiner for the College and Chair of the Specialty Specific Board in General Surgery, and is the Simulation Lead for Human Factors for the Trust. - Mr Shyam Matanhelia, MBBS, MS, FRCSEd, FRCSEd (Urology)

Mr Matanhelia is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, with a special interest in minimal access surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and graduated from Kanpur, India. He has been teaching, training and mentoring laparoscopic surgery for the last 10 years and has conducted several laparoscopy training workshops in the UK and abroad. He has been involved in the development of a physical integrated laparoscopic simulator. He has also developed a systematic programme which has made laparoscopic skills training and suturing easier and more enjoyable. He leads the Robotic Urology Cancer Surgery in Blackburn. - Dr Joshua Fasuyi, BSc, MBBS
Junior Doctor
Dr Fasuyi graduated from St George’s, University Of London with a BSc Hons in Biomedical Science in 2013 and an MBBS in 2016. He has a strong interest in surgery and has therefore pursued opportunities to explore this by attending courses, improving his surgical skills in theatre, and teaching as faculty on a variety of surgical skills courses. He has undertaken a year out of training following completion of his Foundation Programme to further enhance his surgical portfolio and to gain further insight into surgery as a career. His interests are in general and plastic surgery. - Ms Judith Johnson
Theatre Nurse and Surgical Skills Facilitator
Ms Johnson is a Theatre Nurse by background, having worked in theatres for over 30 years. She started in post as a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) almost 16 years ago. She mostly works across colorectal, upper GI and breast surgery, with some vascular surgery occasionally. She assists with all operations in these specialities including open, laparoscopic and robotic procedures. She has taught and organised training for basic surgical skills for around 10 years and has been approved as faculty by the Royal College of Surgeons of England to teach on their Basic Surgical Skills courses. - Mr Ian Malcolmson

Preston Orthopaedics and Trauma Society
As Co-Founder and President of the Preston Orthopaedics and Trauma Society, Mr McKay was responsible for organising a series of award-winning MSK Study Days in the 2017-18 academic year. He also won the North West regional heat of an RCSEd competition for technical and non-technical surgical skills and placed in the top 10 nationally. Mr McKay has a keen interest in medical education and promoting surgical careers in medical school.
