Description:

This course aims to provide delegates with the opportunity to practice and enhance their urological skills on animal tissue and dry models. Early year surgical trainees often have limited exposure and opportunity to learn basic urology skills. This course therefore aims to increase confidence and encourage the effective execution of routine urological procedures.

Delegates will receive supervision from consultantsand learn how to successfully perform hydrocele repair and scrotal exploration +/- fixation on specially prepared animal testicles, as well as perform circumcision and suprapubic catheters on plastic models. The day will comprise of a variety of skills workshops interspersed with lectures which will cover the management of urological emergencies and routine outpatient urology. The ways in which to competently use a bladder scan will also be explored.

Each delegate will receive a certificate upon completion of the course.

Aims:
  • To equip surgical trainees with the skills required for safe scrotal surgery using animal tissue and dry specimens.
  • To ensure that on-call surgical FY2s and CT2s are competent in the management of acute urological emergencies.
  • To improve the confidence of delegateswhen managing patients in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, delegates will:
  • be able to take a focused history, examine, and manage patients who are in a routine urological OPD clinic.
  • be able to diagnose and manage an acute scrotum, phimosis, paraphimosis, penile fractures and acute urinary retentions
  • be able to describe various types of catheters and their usage
  • understand the principles behind SPC catheterisation, indications and contraindications surrounding SPC insertion, and how to confidently perform the procedure.
  • know how to confidently explore a scrotum, untort the testes, and perform testicular fixation safely.
  • understand the principles of Lords and Jabulay hydrocele repair and know how to consent for and perform them.
  • be able to perform circumcision and vasectomy in a safe and confident manner, as well as understand the law and ethics when consenting for these two procedures.
