9th September 2021

School of Biosciences, Cardiff University

About

In the MRCS OSCE exam, the surgical trainees are expected to have a good working knowledge of general physiological principles, core knowledge of the physiology of specific systems and an understanding of their application in surgical practice. This intensive one-day revision course will provide the candidates with an overview of basic physiological principles, and the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal and the central nervous systems. The course will be delivered using a series of interactive lectures with OSCE focus and OSCE scenarios. All major areas as stipulated in the MRCS Part B syllabus will be covered.

Happy to say that I passed. I think the course was invaluable and Prof Enoch did a great job at whipping us through all the important stuff. I personally found the exam challenging (and thought I had failed). As it turns out my scores were good - passing both components. In particular there were a few top tips that we went through that came up that I don't think I would have got had I not attended the course - Z-stitch, specific technique for tying knots (i.e., exactly what the examiners were looking for you to do to gain the points), carcinoid. Generally I think it was a great way to spend the last few days before the exam (where I normally tend to flounder and struggle to motivate myself). Thanks again so much to Prof Enoch for all his hard work. And for you for organising the whole thing.

I am sure that it’s only because of this course that I passed the exam. The part B course was even better than the part A course. I very much enjoyed the teaching as well as the opportunity to test yourself under exam conditions. I appreciate your hard work in order to provide a course despite the COVID pandemic. The exam went well as there were no topics that had not been touched at all during the course. Thanks again to the whole team organising the course, all the examiners and most of all to Prof Enoch for all he’s taught us over the last year.

I found the course useful in terms of its breadth; it covered a large number of topics and maximised the number of contact hours possible over the weekend. The practical skills and anatomy teaching were particularly useful, and I found the faculty as a whole to be very engaging and encouraging. The content covered was faultless and feel it was a very professional course. Many thanks.

I successfully passed the exam in October 2019. The MRCS Part B course in Cardiff was an excellent preparation for the actual exam - the anatomy teaching, and the mock anatomy exams in particular, prepared me extremely well for the real exam, and many of the knowledge stations felt very straightforward after the preparation I had been put through! Thanks again, I really enjoyed the course, and it definitely helped my exam performance greatly!

Pleased to say I passed my exam. I had failed it before so this was a great relief! I thought the course in Cardiff was really good. I can’t think of a specific thing that was taught that definitely helped with exam but for me having a detailed overview of the anatomy gave me confidence in the things I knew and then highlighted areas I needed to look at again. Really glad I went.
