Workshops

1. Basic Surgical Skills – Suturing:

This workshop will seek to teach delegates how to safely handle surgical equipment and effectively perform simple continuous sutures and simple interrupted sutures.

2. Basic Surgical Skills - Knot Tying:

This workshop will seek to teach and enable delegates to practice a wide variety of knot tying techniques used in wound closure.

3. Chest Drain Insertion:

Inserting chest drain is an essential skill required for all aspiring surgeons, particularly cardiothoracic and trauma. This workshop will seek to teach this skill using animal tissue.

4. Vascular Anastomoses:

This workshop will teach students to experience the process of anastomosis of blood vessels (connecting blood vessels together) via suturing.

5. Orthopaedic Skills:

This orthopaedic workshop will seek to provide an opportunity for all budding orthopods to practice orthopaedic skills such as dynamic hip screw (DHS) insertion and external fixation, and get to handle the various types of orthopaedic hardware including plates and screws.

6. Spinal Neurosurgery:

This workshop will provide students with an insight into neurosurgery via a practical session on different types of neuro spinal procedures.

7. Tendon Repair:

This orthoplastics workshop will involve the use of animal tissue to enable delegates to practice repair of a tendon rupture using the ‘Modified Kessler’ technique.

8. Skin Flap Reconstruction:

This plastic surgery workshop will seek to teach delegates how to perform the Z-plasty and rhomboid-plasty techniques using animal tissue.

9. Surgical Portfolio Building:

The workshop will detail the application process for Core surgical trainees. Tips on how to prepare a surgical portfolio will be given together with explanations on how to showcase evidence of achievements, knowledge and skills.

This workshop will provide an overview of the steps necessary to apply to medical school as well as the opportunity to ask questions on topics such as interviews or UCAS.

11. Local Flaps (Plastics)

This workshop will use animal tissue in order to provide delegates with the opportunity to practice creating a local flap which are typically used in plastic surgery for reconstructing replacement tissue into a recipient site. The tutors will firstly demonstrate how to create the flap and delegates will then be given the opportunity to practice the skill.

12. Interventional radiology

This workshop will enable delegates to gain access to high tech flow models and experience angioplasty, thrombectomy and embolization in a simulated setting.

13. Laparoscopic Skills

This workshop will detail the core laproscopic skills which are essential for many surgical specialities. Delegates will work on specifically designed laparoscopic work stations to learn a variety of knot tying and suturing techniques.
