About

This two-day intensive preparatory course is specifically designed for candidates appearing for the MRCS exam in October 2021. The course will primarily focus on practice of hands-on practical skills, clinical examination skills, and communication skills. In addition, there will be a summary revision (question and answer format) of the core knowledge areas tested in the exam, although there will be no teaching on these topics.

This attendance course is delivered to a small group of delegates and complies with the Health Authority and Government guidelines for social distancing and other appropriate measures.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Summary Revision of Applied Surgical Anatomy
  • Summary Revision of General Physiological Principles
  • Summary Revision of General and System Specific Pathology
  • Summary Revision of Principles of Surgery in General
Procedural Skills:
  • Suturing techniques, sutures and needles
  • Excision of a lesion
  • Knot-tying (Reef, Surgical, Instrument tie)
  • Male urinary catheterisation
  • Cannulation and venipuncture
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology
  • Infiltration of local anaesthetic
  • Debridement of a contaminated wound
  • ATLS principles and management of patients with trauma
Examination Skills:
  • Varicose vein examination
  • Arterial examination
  • Neck and thyroid examination
  • Inguinoscrotal examination
  • Abdominal examination
  • Hip examination
  • Knee examination
  • Shoulder examination
  • Spine (back) examination
  • Cranial nerve examination
  • Lumps and lesions
  • Cutaneous malignancies
Communication Skills:
  • Cancelled operation
  • Breaking bad news
  • Information giving
